Any recommendations for a flat pedal winter show. I’ve heard that the Five Ten Freerider High Top is a good show for winter riding but it’s out of stock everywhere in most sizes and Adidas told me they won’t have more until Fall 2019. Wow, they are obviously a customer-centric business… NOT!
The low weight is achieved by the use of every lightweight material you can think of: carbon-reinforced thermoplastic bodies; ceramic bearings; titanium axles; titanium bolts; and aluminium top plates. The cleats have been lightened too with carbon fiber replacing the plastic and aluminium fasteners instead of steel. They’re bonkers expensive, but you have to admire the fanaticism.
“Spank isn’t the only pedal manufacturer offering pedals in different sizes, but the brand is still very much in a minority, and these Spoon pedals are one of the cheaper options with sizing options. All sizes have a platform length of 105mm, but varying widths, respectively 90, 100 and 110 millimetres for the small, medium and large sizes…” Read the full review here.

That’s perhaps why you might find cyclocross coaches recommending flat pedals for young racers. It’s vital for cyclocrossers to be able to bunny-hop confidently, and properly. Learning the real technique means positioning your feet properly, and managing your bicycle’s weight. Flat pedals force a rider to do exactly that, without allowing clipless pedals to pick up the slack.
Clipless pedals have a spring-loaded mechanism that grabs a specially shaped stud, known as a cleat, on the sole of the shoe. You press the cleat down to click it into the mechanism, and twist out to release.
If you’ve got the money or if you find an awesome sale (which I did), try the DMR Vault Magnesium Superlights. Mg body and Ti spindle make for 290 gram pedals (that’s for the pair). They have a large platform and amazing grip, so they definitely work for big downhills. The only drawback is they have a 85 kg (188 lb) rider’s weight limit. So they don’t work for bigger riders. Plus, DMR’s quality control has been poor on these, so you may have to rebuild them once to get them right. There are also some nice nylon pedals out there. RaceFace Chesters (340g) and Black Ops (375g) are nice light weight options that are durable and don’t lose their color over time. I think many of the colors with the nylons look kind of cheezy, but the solid black looks great from beginning to end imo. Plus, they are not expensive and perform very well. If you like black colored pedals, I don’t there is any better option for the price than the nylons. Plus you won’t have to hear that terrible “ching” when your pedal strikes a rock.
As the biggest pedal in the range, the X2 came out in 2015 as the successor to the X1. Although they look similar, the X2 brought key improvements including reduced weight, a thinner platform, and the omission of rock-catching cut-outs on the body’s leading edge. They’re a little lighter, and our test set came out to 444g for the pair (without cleats). The X2 also uses a broader angled back plate that helps guide the cleats in during entry.
There are also practical issues that come with wearing open-toed footwear on a bike: inclement weather, muddy terrain, and the odd errant bee that may want to lodge itself between your foot and the insole of the sandal are the main concerns for the sandal-toting cyclist.
"I am an amateur bike rider and was pretty nervous about riding in the street," she said. "There aren’t dedicated bike lanes in this part of town and people do not respect riders, so I took the sidewalk almost the entire way."
The Ksyrium wheelsThe wheels by themselves are good wheels (remember, I ran them with at least 10 different tubed tyres before trying tubeless). They feel light and fast. They look pretty bling with one yellow spoke and some matching yellow stickers on the rim. I normally run carbon rims in my race bike, so I had to go out and purchase some alloy-friendly brake pads for these rims.
