And so we set off. It’s very, very (very) moist, but thankfully not actually raining. Breath condenses in curlicues of cloud as we head up the drive that I sloshed my way down in the rain last night; we cross the main road, and then head over a field. It’s at this point, as the terrain dips downwards and speed picks up, that I realise two things – one, that it’s really rather bloody cold, and two, wet chalk is famously less grippy than Yorkshire grit. It’s actually rather greasier than an oiled ferret selling used cars. I make it down to the gate with my front wheel ahead of my back one more by luck than judgement, and giving silent thanks that I removed a couple of psi from the Maxxis Forekaster tyres.

The M424 pedals are excellent for commuting. Because you don’t actually need to be clipped in to use them, you can simply stamp on the pedals as the lights go green and then clip in when you are up to speed.

For clipless beginners, SPD pedals are the way to go. Most pedals are double-sided, which makes learning to clip in much easier.

I decided to take a deeper look at e-bikes because of their potential to make life easier for some of the nearly 70,000 commuters who travel between Clark County and Oregon. Would increased e-bike usage make a significant dent in the large volumes of people driving from their Point A Southwest Washington homes in to Point B Oregon jobs, plus the return trip?

The bold text is quite important, because you need the adjustment freedom a band mount derailleur offers.  Its not difficult to setup and once correctly aligned provides precise and reliable front mech changes time and time again.  Ive not adjusted the position once since I initially dialled in the position.

Underfoot, the broad platform provides a decent amount of lateral support, though it’s not so wide that it’s overly susceptible to rock strikes. The large body also gives you a big target to aim for when you’re scrabbling to get clipped back in.

Unlike Shimano’s old Saint and DX flat pedals though, the pins used on the XT body don’t thread in from the back. Instead, Shimano uses steel grub screws that thread directly into the pedal body. This presents an issue if you grind a pin against a rock, as you’re also grinding away the surface that you would insert a 2mm hex key into for installing or removing the pins. Once this happens, it’s a case of getting out the ‘negotiator’ (pliers) to remove those busted pins.

‘Flat pedals are for beginners’, goes an insult I’ve only rarely heard. People can get staunchly tribal about it, pointing all the way up the leader boards to justify their stance. It used to be that downhill World Cup podiums were dominated by flat pedals, but, it seems, no longer, with more riders nowadays running clipless (Sam Hill being a notable exception). At the same time, bike geometry has become more aggressive, and cross-country courses, mostly dominated by clipless riders, have become more extreme than they used to be. In the midst of all that there seem to be plenty of recreational riders who prefer flats.

I opted for the larger of the two sizes, which gave me 114x111mm of surface area to slap my feet onto. I really appreciated this when scrabbling to get a foot back on in tricky terrain.
