That meant brand new pads on brand new machined rims. The result was amazing braking from the very beginning. I set a few descending PBs during my tyre testing. I suspect that on the given descents I would have achieved a PB with any of the race tyres installed because it was the braking confidence that created the PB (rather than the specifics of the tyre). I currently use some carbon soled MTB shoes with M520s.  Would I honestly notice any difference if I switched to a road shoe/pedal system?

If you prefer the Shimano ‘Trail’ design, the M530 pedal is the budget option for you. The cage design provides some impact protection whilst riding, as well as offering a little more support for your shoes when clipped in, or for those loose moments when you have to unclip.

Each side of the XT flat pedal gets 10 screw-in pins. The stock pins are very shallow and not particularly grippy with their smooth rounded heads. I’m guessing these are designed for recreational riders who want a quality flat pedal, but might be scared off by shin-chewing pins.

For regular and technical trail riding, I use Shimano XT clipless and Specialized Comp Mountain Bike shoes.

The shoes feel plenty efficient, and only minimal heel slip is felt when making a specific effort to seek it. Where a race shoe’s complete stiffness means your foot naturally wants to pull away from the board-like sole, the XC5’s sole allows some flex to retain the foot.
