I used Shimano SPD 520 clipless for years, but the hot spots on the ball of your foot they can create permanently damaged the nerves in my feet, causing a complete loss of feeling.  I switched to 100 x 100 mm platform pedals and I now vastly prefer them  for urban riding.  Besides all the advantages of platfroms and avoiding hot spots and nerve damage, there is no more clipity-clop walking around in cafes and shops or on the train or the ferry.  I can now ride in my Converse’s if I want to.

I learned how to rely on flat pedal pins and concavity to power through steep climbs, technical features, and jumps. I chose my first set of flats based on price alone, and quickly found that there are huge differences amongst flat pedals. Here is my rundown of five of the best flat pedals out there!

Even if you find you don’t like flats, all of the things you’ll learn from them you’ll take back to clipless pedals as a better rider. The snobby ‘flats are for beginners’ insult is only true in the sense that we’re all beginners at something on a bike, and flat pedals are an absolutely great tool for learning and having fun with that.

With the tension adjustment left untouched for my first couple of rides, I found unclipping tricky. Even with the tension screw backed off completely, things still felt quite tight. This is why so many mistakes happen. "Clipless are designed to keep your foot engaged when pulling up even if you rotate your ankle a bit so as not to mistakenly unclip when sprinting, climbing a hill, or jumping a log," Compton explains. So how can you improve your release skills? "Make sure to push down on the pedal and rotate your ankle to unclip," Compton says. "If you pull up as you’re trying to unclip, the cleat won’t release and you’ll get stuck."
