With a mechanical system you’ll almost certainly need to adjust the gear cable tension after the first few rides, and probably occasionally after that, but that’s not an issue with electronic shifting.
I’ve always run clip-in (well, since SPDs were invented anyway…) and don’t play well with flats due to wonky ankles/knees, but I can appreciate how flats are superior in places like Innerleithen, where being able to micro-dab is a benefit
Can you handle that? No-one here is saying Surly sucks and didn’t know how to use Speedplays. So don’t take offence. We’re not saying we’re more skilled than you, or more technical than you, or better riders than you. We just got on with them, you didn’t.
Some people say clipless are x percent more efficient and it’s easier to bunnyhop but I’m not getting left behind and can bunyhop, in a limited sense, with flats so I’m ok thanks.
Disagree with the Speedplay comments above. I moved to them this year and yes IÂ hated them for a few weeks and was considering eBaying them.

They’re not perfect, the 2.5 mm steel pins could be taller, and the platform will not be wide enough for some riders preferences. The pins are an easy fix for those who want more traction. I found the platform wide enough and appreciated the pedals durable construction. After six months of abuse and many rock strikes, they’re showing inevitable external signs of abuse. Functionally, they still spin smooth with zero play in the axle and cleat engagement feels like new. Read the full review.
Overall, I was impressed with the improvements in Time’s new Xpro 10. They’re not cheap by any means, but the carbon fairing looks great, clipping in and out is a simple affair, and they’re nice and light. I’ll try to get to the bottom of the squeaking and update if and when, but based on the testimony of my colleague and most other users, it appears this is only affecting a minority.
You might get a little bit of occasional chain rub on the chain set because the chain won’t sit quite straight on the chainwheel sometimes, and…
