Granted, I wear a big shoe with a long toe box, so I suppose not everyone will experience this. Also, not everyone unclips the same way; I tend to rotate my heel out, but I know Leah rotates hers in, so she probably wouldn’t experience this issue. My solution is to unclip in the 12 o’clock position which places the crankarm out of the way. Still, I’ve had many close calls when I found myself unable to quickly unclip in my usual manner.
It’s very easy to strip the threads from an aluminium crank arm and expensive to replace it if you do, so if you’re not sure the pedal is going in correctly unscrew it and start again.

Will see how the missus gets on during the summer. She’s sub 60kg and quite a new cyclist, so her experience will be more telling than mine. She’s fast though at clipping in with her Keos, but occassionally she does miss it on first go and lags behind and has to catch up. That random element is worth eliminating, especially buzzing through town as you can get separated through traffic. Â

The sole reveals a similarly relaxed design, with a carbon fiber-reinforced nylon construction that rates a 7/12 on Shimano’s stiffness scale. Keeping the sole covered is a tread from Michelin, a company that knows a thing or two about rubber tread and off-road traction. Provisions for toe spikes are provided, but the optional 18mm toe spikes themselves are not.
If possible, loosen the cleat retention mechanism on your pedals (again: read the manual!) so you can unclip super easily while you’re learning. Then, set your bike up on a trainer (or hold yourself up to stay stationary) and practice clipping in and out.

The wide carbon fibre bodies make for comfortable and efficient pedalling, and I found them to be easy to clip in and out of.
