With a couple of exceptions, such as Crank Bros and Time, many of the 2-bolt cleat designs (Wellgo, Ritchey, Boardman) are interchangable or, at least, the pedal design will accept the Shimano SPD cleat without too much problem. I have a couple of old sets of VP pedals that work fine with SPD cleats, but not the other way round.
When it comes to customizing pin placement, Chromag is king! With 40 different spots to position pins per pedal, the Scarabs are a force to be reckoned with for flat shoes everywhere. I found them to be the best in show by a long shot.
The Vertic Trail pedal was designed for XC, All Mountain, and Enduro use, and features a sophisticated design with features that include an open pedal body for self-cleaning, a fixed stand with two replaceable pins on the front side, and a flattened design for easy engagement.
The pins are definitely the highlight of the Scarabs. Each pin has a shear line which causes them to break away upon hard impact.

You might, but you probably don’t.
You might think flat pedals are a solved problem, but the answer is ‘not quite’. In mountain biking and BMX history, flat pedal design has zeroed in on a couple of distinct pedal shapes, but is still evolving. Let me take you through a few bits of terminology and engineering.
Hey, not all gifts have to be dazzling: sometimes you’re just looking for a cheap, practical little stocking stuffer. To that end, why not give the gift of butyl? See, when you’re a cyclist you can never have too many inner tubes, and while it may seem a bit cold and impersonal to give them as gifts, just remember you’re talking about people who get excited about socks for chrissakes.
Yeah, I’m not sure why FiveTen chose to make this style of shoe. I re-read Chris Daniels’ review of the Hellcats from last year, and while he wasn’t quite so harsh in his assessment, his review was pretty lukewarm.
