Those who love Speedplays rave about the low weight, adjustability, and shallow stack. A recent redesign of the cleat added a rubber aero cover that makes them far easier to walk in than the previous version, or many other systems. However, it’s undeniable they need more looking after than most pedals and they’re susceptible to clogging from even the smallest amount of dirt.
Except that is not the case at all. Multirelease alows you to release in multiple lateral directions, not if pulling upwards. I only ever use multirelease cleats and pull up on pedals all the time. Without coming out.
I thought so as well. Where did I not say that its OK for you to like them, continue to use them or advocate their use? I’ve tried them over a relatively extended period and I think they are shit in comparison to other options. I’ve tried other pedals that I think are better to way better than the speedplay. I expressed that view on the forum, which is how this all began. You use them and you think they are great for reasons that you explained. Â So do others, and that’s OK as well.
I’ve got the M324 pedals mentioned above on my pub bike. They are great for what they are, but you do have to watch it if you’re clipped in, as it’s very easy to catch the cage on the floor when cornering.

While it may not be my style, I can certainly understand this impulse—after all, you never outgrow wanting to go outside and play with your toys with your friends, and trying to clean that trickly line is no different than shooting hoops or pitching horseshoes or working on any other methodical physical pursuit.
The guts of the pedal is a well-finished Aluminium body that houses serviceable cup and cone bearings. A metal cage is bolted on for riding in flats, and on the other side you get an adjustable tension SPD binding for when you’ve got your cleats on. The pedals are very well finished and run smoothly from the off, and the fact that they’re easy to strip down is a bonus.
Personally, I’m in a similar boat. I used to swear by Look pedals, but the stability of earlier Keo versions would quickly degrade due to pedal body wear. This issue is now fixed, but Look’s bearing durability and serviceability doesn’t hold a candle to Shimano’s. Despite being a weight weenie at heart, I made the decision to have the weight penalty of Shimano and haven’t felt compelled to change since.
So again, calm down and accept that I, and several others on this thread now, bought Speedplay pedals and love them.Â
thanks for the info. I don’t think I will be going far up 25% and/or pedalling 90rpm for hours but, when I have eventually ground my way to the top, I want to be able to go hell for leather back down hence my "need" for the wide range that a triple setup provides. My current tourer has xtr 3×9 – 44/32/22 and 11-32 in an aluminium frame. I have a carbon frame road bike and had a steel one years ago. I have got it into my head that I should try a titanium frame before it is too late (bucket list) but, as discussed, I need the triple set up and J.Laverack, for example, don’t have a triple solution in their offering.
Also into my third year but with EPS. Haven’t regretted it for a second. Effortless and trouble free gear changing especially when braking. I’m thinking of replacing my touring bike and I hope I can get it fitted with triple electronic shifting.
