Overall, I was impressed with the improvements in Time’s new Xpro 10. They’re not cheap by any means, but the carbon fairing looks great, clipping in and out is a simple affair, and they’re nice and light. I’ll try to get to the bottom of the squeaking and update if and when, but based on the testimony of my colleague and most other users, it appears this is only affecting a minority.

“My move to Speedplay (about 10 years ago) was all in pursuit of extra cleat adjustment, and it’s something I still prize along with the double-sided entry for the pedals. I use the aluminium 3-hole-adapter baseplate for my cleats because it offers extra fore-aft adjustment and isn’t prone to cracking like the standard plastic adapter baseplate. I’ve found a dry lube works well for the cleat springs, but I always forget to use it as often as I should. Some folks find pedals like the M520s a bit small. The PD-M424 pedals are an excellent alternative. Intended for mountain biking, they have a tough plastic platform around the pedal mechanism that supports more of the shoe. This works really well with shoes that have more flexible soles and are therefore easier to walk in.

Even with cleats, the Hellcats work pretty well with flat pedals, thanks to the deep cleat recess in the sole.  I had some concern about the cleat catching on the pedal, but didn’t find this to be an issue in limited testing. This is probably off-label use anyway, so take this with a grain of salt.

I bought a pair of these on the strength of this review in the mag so they’d better be good or I may write a strongly worded letter.

I learned how to rely on flat pedal pins and concavity to power through steep climbs, technical features, and jumps. One of the coolest features is the full-length chromoly-steel spindle. This makes the pedals feel incredibly stable, and should prove beneficial for heavier riders. The only downside is this adds weight and thickness to the pedals. At 18mm thick, the Stomps are the thickest pedals I tested by far.

This is important! Don’t wait until the last minute to unclip. "As you’re rolling to a stop, shift your weight to the foot that stays clipped in," Compton explains, "and then unclip the foot that you’ll put on the ground and just leave it gently on the pedal, so when you do come to that stop you can put your foot on the ground quickly."

Seriously Surly, time to get a grip. I bought something, and I love it. I buy other things, and I slate them, as evidenced by multiple threads on this site. Vision wheels and those shitty mugduards as two recent examples.

I am using Shimano PD-T420 CLICK’R pedals on my road bike. Using my bike also for communting, I can easily pedal with my leather shoes for office on the flat side.
