My experience with SH56 cleats is that they can disengage either by twisting your foot off, as normal, or sliding it off sideways off the pedal. That way, if you are a beginner and have forgotten to unclip, you can more quickly put your foot down.

One of the other advantages of clipless pedals is that you can get more power out of your legs by being able to pull up on the pedal stroke in addition to pushing down however, this highlights the disadvantage of multi-release cleats since if you pulled up on these your foot would come out of the pedal.

Life is simply better with a frame pump. Unless you are trying to win a hill climb or you have a follow car I don’t know why I would ride without Silca’s sleek looking and powerful Impero frame pump. When I travelled, I was able to rely on the Silca to get my tires up to pressure upon arrival. In unfamiliar places, an extra tube gave me the confidence that unless I had severely bad luck I would never be stranded on the side of the road. While I would revert back to my Fabric hand pump on hammerfest rides, the Silca was a steady companion the rest of the time. Also into my third year but with EPS. Haven’t regretted it for a second. Effortless and trouble free gear changing especially when braking. I’m thinking of replacing my touring bike and I hope I can get it fitted with triple electronic shifting.

Disagree with the Speedplay comments above. I moved to them this year and yes I hated them for a few weeks and was considering eBaying them.

The traditional tyres for racing are tubulars. These hand-made tyres have the tube sewn (or vulcanised) inside the tyre body (hence their other names of sew-ups or singles). Punctures are difficult to repair. The tyre is glued to the rim with a liquid adhesive or a double-sided tape. So even replacing a tubular tyre is a lengthy exercise. Clinchers have lower rolling resistance than tubulars. This is primarily due to the energy absorbed by the glue in between the tubular tyre and rim. Clinchers, however, are unsafe to ride once punctured – the tyre almost always comes off the rim unless you ride very gently. Repairs can be done roadside in only a few moments, so there is little reason to continue riding a flattened clincher.

I didn’t see any brands making flats specifically for riders with wide feet while doing this research, but I will certainly keep an eye out. I have tried some ION shoes that were too wide for my feet, and maybe they would work well.
