But as a staunch commuter and road cyclist, I responded, curious what innovation a cabinet-maker — Mike Lohmeyer — could provide an industry plagued by stagnation. Turns out, Lohmeyer and “Frank” engineered — and possibly perfected — a modern take on the AeroLite pedal that dates back to the ’70s.
Truth be told, I’ll put my hand up as one of those roadie snobs who once wouldn’t be caught dead in treaded shoes on a proper road ride. But in all honesty, the difference in performance between these A600 pedals and good XC race shoes, and dedicated road shoes and pedals, was impressively subtle in my six months comparing the two setups.
Moving away from cross country shoes other mountain bike shoes have more flexible footbeds, making them better all rounder’s for comfortable trail riding, the odd bit of walking or hike-a-biking and also offering more grip on larger platform pedals like these Crankbrothers Mallet E pedals. Something like the Giro Manta is a typical trail shoe design, it has the tidy looks of an XC shoe, it’s pretty light, fends off weather well and is stiff without being impractically so.
The majority of first time buyers will end up with Look style pedals – these are widely stocked and can be purchased for a reasonable fee. However, there’s a variety of different styles of clipless pedals – each version comes with pros and cons.
They are indeed the way to go. I use XT pedals for commuting on the crosser, Saints on my MTB and XT caged pedals on the Cervelo too (the latter does earn me some looks of disgust though)!
Also into my third year but with EPS. Haven’t regretted it for a second. Effortless and trouble free gear changing especially when braking. I’m thinking of replacing my touring bike and I hope I can get it fitted with triple electronic shifting.
When it comes to choosing pedals, many people stick to what they know, but pedal technology, like everything else in the cycling industry, has evolved considerably, even if the aesthetics haven’t. Smoother float, larger pedal/cleat contact and reliability are all places that we notice the greatest improvement. That’s not to mention that the weight of both these systems is incredibly light as well. The French have led the clipless pedal business for decades with their designs, quality and attention to detail, but it’s their passion to deliver the highest-performance products that keeps both companies on the innovative edge.
Yeah… An article written for people with wide feet needs to be written…or are there still no flats for Fred Flintstone riders?
Under a recently announced UCI rule that takes effect Jan. 1, all racers under 13 are banned from using clipless pedals in BMX races.

Clipless pedals have a spring-loaded mechanism that grabs a specially shaped stud, known as a cleat, on the sole of the shoe. You press the cleat down to click it into the mechanism, and twist out to release.
There isn’t a triple option for EPS. In fact I don’t think there’s a triple option for any e-shifting system.
