As you explore, you’ll find that shoe stickiness, sole stiffness, pedal shape, pin length and pin shape all contribute to (or detract from) grip. Extreme combinations of pins and shoes can create so much grip that you can’t even reposition your foot without lifting it, and preference on this varies between riders. There are two types of clipless pedal. Pedals for road racing follow the original concept introduced by Look in 1984. The cleat stands proud of the sole and is attached by three bolts. The pedals only have a mechanism on one side, so to clip in you have to catch the nose of the pedal just right, which takes a while to learn.

The biggest difference between the two when it comes to pedaling is the float. The Time has the added float laterally, and your foot feels like it is pivoting from the center of the cleat. The Look’s float is all in the rear as it pivots off the front-cleat contact point. This difference doesn’t seem like much, but they each offer a very different and unique outcome.

“I got sick of them clogging up with dirt. There was one specific ride; I remember it clearly. I forgot to pee before I left the house, was out riding on local dirt roads, pulled into the first porta potty, saw that the ground was muddy, and had a decision to make: unclip and risk clogging up the cleat, or continue riding and hold my bladder. I refused to have my bladder held hostage by my equipment. I unclipped, got off, peed, and could not clip in for the remainder of the ride. It wasn’t the first time something like that had happened, but it was the last straw. When I got home, I ordered three sets of Shimano pedals. Haven’t switched back since.”

Sealing is a crucial aspect of flat pedals for UK riders and, like a lot of bike components, this aspect tends to vary, perhaps according to where they were designed. Poor seals might not matter so much in sunny locales, but in UK filth you’ll only get so long before you hear a grinding noise pulverising your pedals from the inside out.

I started on the multi-release clip and found them to be extremely good. Never had a false release and only swapped later on to Speedplay for a better float.

One divide showed up really clearly among the people riding these pedals, and we’ve tried to reflect it in our category picks: Some riders vastly prefer thinner, flatter platforms such as the Hope F20 and say these feel like they have more grip. Others have a massive preference for the kind of bowl shape and feel you get from something like a DMR Vault. These are quite polarised and well cemented preferences, likely coming from differences in riding style, terrain, anatomy, technique and shoe construction – in other words, a lot of variables that mean you’ll only get so far without some real world experimentation to find which flats are right for you.

It can be more difficult with an electronic system. road.cc technical editor Dave Arthur had a Di2 battery fail while out on the road, for example (it stopped working entirely; it hadn’t just run out of charge). It took a while to get to the root of the issue and he was left with an unrideable bike until he’d sourced a new battery. That could be a big problem if you’re in the back of beyond.
