Staff at The Arizona Republic took on a carless commute to explore public transit options in the Phoenix area.
I have to use the SH56 multi release as my left foot won’t unclip without these. I was advised by a cycle shop that I would have problems with any other pedal systems – but haven’t tested this. What no one tells you is that the cleats wear out and make it hard to unclip. I have fallen over twice, so I keep an eye on this and as soon as they seem the slightest bit sticky swap them for new ones.

He’s got a hill behind the shop. I pedaled up the hill with ease. I sped up to 20 mph on flat city streets with far less effort than on any of my own bikes.
The tread pattern, called “Dotty,” is one that’s familiar to FiveTen fans. It’s basically big circles, and while the tread isn’t deep, the rubber more than makes up for it with good grip on solid surfaces.
As a result of this resurgence, footwear brands are newly invested in flat-soled shoes. It’s even spawned some new companies, including Ride Concepts, which debuted its line of both clipless and flat shoes that incorporate 3DO material into the insoles and ankles for added protection on the trails. 3D0 flexes and feels soft to the touch, but the material immediately hardens upon impact.

The release on both systems is distinct, and neither leads to unwanted exit. Due to its Iclic system, once the Time releases, it doesn’t feel like it wants to pull you back in if you are unclipping slow before a stop. The Look, on the other hand, always wants to maintain its closed position.
The only other issue I noticed was durability. While the stainless steel pedals will take a beating, the cleats I received were aluminum. This kept weight down (about 1.5 ounces per cleat), but they quickly took on battle scars. I asked Lohmeyer about this too, and he sent along Pitbull prototype 2.0. These are made of stainless steel and are about twice as heavy as the aluminum option. But their strength is far greater.
