The extra float and seamless engagement provide some of the freedom of a flat pedal with the added security of being clipped in. The only downside is that they’re more expensive than Shimano’s XTR Trail M9020 pedals, and nearly double the XT M8020 Trail platform pedals. And while they’re lighter than the Mallet DH pedals (480g) they’re still 41g heavier than the XTR pedals. 

I use the e-bike for various errands in addition to recreational riding, although this time of year it’s a little more challenging for me because I don’t particularly enjoy riding in the rain.

A slightly more affordable version of the TIME Xpresso 15 pedals (which retail at a jaw dropping £400), the Xpresso 6’s are a little heavier (213g) but considerably more affordable.

Entry and exit is positive and easy, tension adjustment is simple and you can use them for everything from commuting to cyclo-cross.

You can get a basic pair of clipless pedals for less than£50 – and they’ll do the job. Spend more, and the mechanism will be fine tuned, giving a stronger grip in the cleat – which will be a welcome improvement for racers, but beginners might actually want a little more float.

SPD-SL pedals are much like Shimano’s groupsets: reliable, functional, easy to use, readily available, and without significant cost. As I’ve covered in my review of Shimano Dura-Ace R9100 pedals, Shimano is simply the best once you factor in all-out durability and dependability. They’re not the lightest or most adjustable, but they just work. Adding to their popularity is the fact that they’ve often been included as standard equipment on many entry-level road bikes.

Hey, we’re all adults here, so let’s be honest: sometimes you’ve got ulterior motives over the holidays, and giving a gift is less about pleasing someone than it is about teaching them a much-needed lesson. They may not have the glitz and glamour of higher-end models, but the R540 pedals are almost indistinguishable from their pricier sibling when in use. The engagement is not quite as refined, and the alloy body adds a bit weight, but at this bargain price it would be hard to complain!

The carbon body is tough and durable, engagement system is very well made and easy to get in and out of as Time claims. They’re impressively light considering the surface area.
