I currently use some carbon soled MTB shoes with M520s. Â Would I honestly notice any difference if I switched to a road shoe/pedal system?
You can adjust the tension too. I ran a shade under half, which prevented my feet from lifting out without adding too much lateral restraint on top of that provided by the pins.
The hubs roll well and feel incredibly smooth. These have the latest Mavic freehub design too, which promises greater durability than the nylon bushing they used to use and more rapid engagement as well. I thought the freehub mechanism was very quiet (not silent, but unobtrusive). I also like the Mavic skewers very much. They have a predictable, positive action and hold the wheel well.
Shimano first introduced its SPD two-bolt pedal retention system way back in 1990 with the original PD-M737 mountain bike pedal. Although the design has evolved since then, its basic interface is much the same as it once was.
Granted, Ultegra Di2 shifters are slightly cheaper than the mechanical ones (£289.98 versus 319.99), but that’s unusual.
Because the platform is slightly concave, more flexible, downhill-orientated shoes are well supported across most of the pedal.

Add in the relatively low price, widespread availability, and decent durability of the large plastic cleat, and Shimano also set the benchmark for running costs. The cleat’s generously wide platform and softer co-molded contact points even make it far better to walk in than you’d expect, even decent to walk in, even on those dreaded tiled cafe floors. Other makes have sought to catch up in this regard, but SPD-SL still remains the best option in that respect.
