Life is simply better with a frame pump. Unless you are trying to win a hill climb or you have a follow car I don’t know why I would ride without Silca’s sleek looking and powerful Impero frame pump. When I travelled, I was able to rely on the Silca to get my tires up to pressure upon arrival. In unfamiliar places, an extra tube gave me the confidence that unless I had severely bad luck I would never be stranded on the side of the road. While I would revert back to my Fabric hand pump on hammerfest rides, the Silca was a steady companion the rest of the time. Things can get a bit fiddly with pulling the bearings out to clean them, but it’s really not that difficult to do. And technically you do require a very small 10mm cone spanner to retighten the bearings, though I ended up improvising with some needle-nose pliers to get the job done. Once tightened up and reinstalled into the pedal body, the play had disappeared, and the bearings were back to spinning smoothly again.

The key difference is that the cleats and pedals are much broader, arguably offering greater power transfer.

I use flats on my road bike as well as my MTB thanks to having dodgy knees in the past, which used to benefit from my moving my feet around on the pedals slightly when I felt ‘tension’ behind my knee caps. I think I’m nervous about upsetting them again by trying clipless.

As with every road pedal (Speedplay excluded), the A600’s single-sided format is trickier to get going from stoplights and on sketchy terrain than dual-sided designs, and unlike some of Shimano’s earlier attempts at roadie-friendly, single-sided SPD pedals, this is a true single-sided design with a rounded undercarriage that feels unquestionably sketchy if you try to stand on it. And while the A600’s alloy construction is enviably tough, it doesn’t take long before the shiny dark painted surface — it’s not anodized, sadly — starts looking beat up.
