This system combines an SPD system with a flat pedal – which makes them a great option for people who feel nervous about cycling clipped in, or commuters who want to be able to quickly get a foot on the pedal without having to search for the contact. The shape also means you can use them wit standard trainers, too.

For me…. The Time Expresso’s have proven themselves to give the most comfortable fit to the pedal in terms of float, release force e.t.c – BUT – after repeated bitter experience I’ll never now buy anything above the Expresso 4s/Mavic’s Zxellium Elites as the bearings, on these models and their more expensive siblings, have too often proven themselves to have a hypochondriacs sensitivity to moisture. I’ll count myself lucky if I get a winters use out of a pair & one cursed set seized after just the one ride in the rain.

I use the e-bike for various errands in addition to recreational riding, although this time of year it’s a little more challenging for me because I don’t particularly enjoy riding in the rain.

Fast forward a couple of decades, and there’s now a load of World Cup downhill racers using clip-in pedals, and (aside from a one Mr Sam Hill) most of the EWS field chooses to clip into their pedals too. That said, there are many different varieties of clip-in pedals these days in addition to the XC racing ‘lollypop’ SPD pedals. For those who prefer baggy shorts and big travel over Lycra and lockouts, there’s a growing crop of platform-style pedals that emulate the larger size of a flat – pins and all – but with a clip mechanism at the centre of the pedal.

Not only the lightest on test, the X2s are the thinnest too at just 15.5mm. Combined with the low-profile mechanism, ground clearance is exceptional, and they provide a more natural feel throughout the pedal stroke compared to thicker pedals. The large 85mm x 95mm body and concave profile allows your shoes to sink into the platform, while flat side sections minimise rocking. Traction is bolstered by five steel pins on each side, though we’d recommend adding a dab of Loctite on the threads. We’ve lost a few.

The unobtrusive mechanism means that out of all the pedals, the X2s were the grippiest and most flat-like if you’re not clipped in. When you are clipped in, stability is insanely good. Knowing that you’re not going to be accidentally ejected off the bike is a huge confidence booster in rough terrain.

He purchased a Specialized Turbo Vado e-bike at Camas Bike and Sport this summer for about $5,000. That price is near the top of what you can to expect to pay for an e-bike. They can be priced as low as $1,500. The price goes up as the bike is outfitted with better components, particularly the battery.

Tension is adjustable, though accessing the 3mm hex bolt is awkward. The level varies from tight, to really-friggin-tight. I certainly wouldn’t put a new rider on these pedals, because their tenacious hold can be intimidating. As the cleats wore in and I got used to them though, I steadily increased the tension to about halfway. Any more than that and you might dislocate your knee trying to unclip.
