We tried a similar update to the “bar pedal” design years ago. While that proved extremely light, we had trouble clipping reliably. The Pitbull update, however, excelled in ease of use thanks to its large clip-in surface. This comes with a few extra ounces, but Lohmeyer isn’t aiming at a Tour-ready pedal with this system.

While the UCI reportedly discussed the rule change with national federation representatives in June at the BMX world championships in Azerbaijan, the change in late September took many by surprise. With the long lead times typical of shoe manufacturing, some brands may have small clipless BMX shoes in production or on the water. Some dealers who are active in the BMX race market have already committed to preseason orders for those shoes. Those sizes may be difficult to sell next year.

Just like the Looks, the cleats come in three different colours, each denoting a different level of float. Again, like the Looks, it’s a system that is well used within the professional peloton, and they aren’t the easiest to walk around in, especially on shiny floors.

Fizik shoes are a common sight in the road market but less so in adventure and mountain bike circles, but these top-end Infinito X1 shoes bring the Italian company’s expertise to a high-level shoe that is ideal for the most demanding riders, those that want a seriously stiff shoe for maximum power transfer. 

The only other issue I noticed was durability. While the stainless steel pedals will take a beating, the cleats I received were aluminum. This kept weight down (about 1.5 ounces per cleat), but they quickly took on battle scars. I asked Lohmeyer about this too, and he sent along Pitbull prototype 2.0. These are made of stainless steel and are about twice as heavy as the aluminum option. But their strength is far greater.

The relatively low price of Xpresso 2s makes them a sensible place to start if you’re a newcomer to road-specific click-in pedals. They’re light, easy to use and very easy to adjust to different foot position and release preferences, though they’re not the most durable.

When I opened the email titled “Patented Bike Pedal,” I was surprised and a little skeptical of the author’s credentials. A cabinet-maker by trade, Mike Lohmeyer said he and his “partner in crime, Frank,” had developed a clipless road pedal and cleat that could make waves in the cycling industry.

That said, many bike fitters have also long loved the Speedplay system for its adjustability. Four different spindle lengths are available, along with different base plates that afford a huge range of fore-aft adjustability. Speedplay cleats are also the easiest of the four major systems when it comes to compensating for different leg lengths. Only recently has Shimano added a choice in pedal axle lengths (standard or +4mm), and it’s likely Speedplay’s success encouraged such an option.

When pedaling, both offer a great platform with lots of support. The bearings are smooth, and during our testing we have had zero issues with either. The Look uses a needle bearing under the platform of the pedal, and from our experience this leads to very little service or maintenance.
