In our recent podcast with pro rider and former observed trials champ, Jeff Lenosky, he mentioned that he rides clipless on the trail, and flats when it’s time to perform some legit tricks. Between Lenosky and the reigning EWS champ Sam Hill there is certainly some legitimacy to riding unclipped.

That’s not my experience: when clean and in decent condition,  I find they’re solid even with quick or sturdy upstrokes on hills, and that they need a bit of a ‘flick’ to disengage, which suits me fine.

If possible, loosen the cleat retention mechanism on your pedals (again: read the manual!) so you can unclip super easily while you’re learning. Then, set your bike up on a trainer (or hold yourself up to stay stationary) and practice clipping in and out.

But Lommele, who plays a lead role in advocating for e-bikes in state legislatures around the country including Washington’s, sees sales continue to grow. E-bike sales at independent bicycle retailers were up 70 percent this year compared with the same 12-month period last year, she said, though the segment is believed to be a low single-digit percentage of overall bike sales in the U.S.
