We’re big fans of electronic shifting here at road.cc and we don’t know of many people who’ve used it regularly wanting to switch back to mechanical shifting, but it’s not without its downsides. Here are some of the little annoyances that we’ve experienced and heard about over the past few years.

As the first clip-in pedal to wear the coveted Saint name, the Saint uses a fixed mechanism that allows it to take a thinner 20.5mm profile, with a robust construction that’s designed to see off plenty of whacks and scrapes. The classic dual-sided SPD mechanism remains, and so do the twin-bolt cleats with their 4° of float. Tension is adjusted via a 3mm hex key, and each side gets removable traction pins.

The pins are definitely the highlight of the Scarabs. Each pin has a shear line which causes them to break away upon hard impact.

Also into my third year but with EPS. Haven’t regretted it for a second. Effortless and trouble free gear changing especially when braking. I’m thinking of replacing my touring bike and I hope I can get it fitted with triple electronic shifting.

OneUp’s aluminium flat pedal offering delivers super sharp and grippy pins with variable heights for their location on the pedal and a super thin and large platform for maximum clearance and stability, making it a cool contender. It’s not quite up there with some of the best in terms of grip and shape, but then its cheaper than some and despite the minor bearing roughness from the get-go, they’ve been hammered in the muck since with no further deterioration. The pins thread through from the opposite side too meaning they can still be removed and/or replaced when you’ve knackered the sharp end. All in all, a very good flat pedal with well thought out features and a reasonable price tag.

Herrigstad and Bendiksen pedal the most typical type of e-bike — those with a battery-powered “assist” that comes via pedaling. When you push the pedals on an e-bike, a small motor engages and gives the rider a boost. The more effort applied, the faster the bike will travel — up to a limited speed assist. Most e-bikes, including Herrigstad’s, come with a power to adjust the boost setting from low, such as on flat terrain, to high, such as on a hill.

I also have noted that except for the flat/spd combined pedals there is no provision for reflectors on the pedals as required by law in the UK. Having said that never been pulled over and always a very visible chap don’t expect it will be a problem.

Gravel riders usually use shoes for XC riding or trail shoes that looks have a ‘cross country style’ as they are better for power transfer and are less bulky, these riders will pretty much always use clipless pedals, the shoes worn might not look dissimilar to ones work by their roadie cousins.

Cycling shoes usually have quite a stiff sole but this varies greatly depending on their intended use. Clip-in shoes tend to have stiffer plastic soles with rubber lugs for good grip. Soles can have carbon fibre inserts through their length or alternatively just in just the midsole to boost stiffness. A cross-country shoe like this pair of Shimano XC7 SPD shoes has a stiff sole for good power transfer on cross-county, cyclocross and gravel bikes. It has a carbon fibre reinforced midsole but it’s shoe brother, the XC9 has a rigid carbon forefoot for an even stiffer sole.
