The topic of road versus mountain bike pedals is a hotly debated one and is something we plan to revisit in near time. Until then, here are our picks.
I’ve always run clip-in (well, since SPDs were invented anyway…) and don’t play well with flats due to wonky ankles/knees, but I can appreciate how flats are superior in places like Innerleithen, where being able to micro-dab is a benefit
Once you’ve selected a pedal system, you’ll find yourself faced with more decisions: all pedal systems are available at a wide range pf price points.
Today has been a salutary lesson in a variety of things – but key among them is that mountain bikes are brilliant, ace trails are ace even if they’re not massively technical, and friends, new and old, are even acer – even if occasionally the weather isn’t.
And there you are, still attached to your state-of-the-art suspension bicycle at the bottom of a ravine.
Of course, I understand that not all cyclists are enchanted by nature, and that for some, the infinite verdant delights of the forest are merely incidental. Most flat pedals run on a cromoly steel axle, though fancier ones may come with titanium ones. Between that axle and the body will be an assortment of bearings and bushings, plus a load of grease. While there are exceptions, more expensive pedals tend to run fully on bearings, and cheaper ones might run entirely on bushings.
