The toe area is lightly reinforced, with some protection given to the big toes. I managed to test this out on both gravel and mountain bike rides, where rocks flipped up were deflected away without a stubbed toe.

Because they hold your feet in the right place on the pedals and keep them there, clipless pedals are more efficient than regular shoes and flat pedals. They’re also much easier to get out of than the clip and strap pedals enthusiast riders and racers used before the 1980s

The shoes feel plenty efficient, and only minimal heel slip is felt when making a specific effort to seek it. Where a race shoe’s complete stiffness means your foot naturally wants to pull away from the board-like sole, the XC5’s sole allows some flex to retain the foot.

The longest part of their commute is actually parking and walking in, since the standard Republic garage pass requires parking above the third floor, which takes basically forever because of the speed bumps (OK, not forever. Mary Jo Pitzl, a reporter here, says it’s about 7 minutes.)

One of the other advantages of clipless pedals is that you can get more power out of your legs by being able to pull up on the pedal stroke in addition to pushing down however, this highlights the disadvantage of multi-release cleats since if you pulled up on these your foot would come out of the pedal.
