Moving away from cross country shoes other mountain bike shoes have more flexible footbeds, making them better all rounder’s for comfortable trail riding, the odd bit of walking or hike-a-biking and also offering more grip on larger platform pedals like these Crankbrothers Mallet E pedals. Standard SPD cleats only release when the rider twists her foot outwards, but multi-release cleats come out if you pull up hard too. That’s a far more natural action for a clipless beginner, who’s probably used to flat pedals that you just lift your foot off.

These test pedals still feel smooth, too, even after a decent stint riding in atrocious conditions. While I love how the Stamp 11s feel, their high price means that I’d happily take the 7s instead, even if they are a touch heavier.

While the shoes and cleats were new, I also removed the pins to begin with to limit interference. As everything settled in though, I added the pins to increase traction.

As the pins are of the grub-screw variety and screw in from the top, they fill with dirt easily, which makes them harder to adjust. I extended them to just over 5mm and was impressed with the traction on offer, bolstered by the incredibly stable platform. I’m yet to dislodge any pins, even after numerous rock strikes.
