It’s all about freedom and control. Crankbrothers took the opportunity to release its Stamp pedals at Interbike 2018, in large part because they make a lot of sense for beginner and intermediate riders. For starters, it’s easier to pull a foot off the pedals in a high-speed corner when the rider isn’t clipped in. And flat pedals are now a lot lighter than they used to be. When compared to clipless pedals, flat pedals also tend to be far less expensive, or at least they can be.

When it comes to clipless pedals, Look is undoubtedly the most iconic. Inspired by the clip-in ski bindings they were already famous for, Look turned to cycling in 1984 and were the first to introduce a truly revolutionary pedal system that was the first to move away from the traditional toe clip/strap system. A lot has changed since those early days, and the 235-gram Keo Blade Carbon is the entry-level carbon offering in Look’s three-model family of Blade pedals that comprises their Race category. The pedal body is carbon and houses either a chromoly steel or titanium axle. There is a larger axle and spindle design that has been updated for 2018. This means a larger roller bearing and 25 percent more space between it and the needle bearing that is directly under the pedal platform.

SPD-SL pedals are much like Shimano’s groupsets: reliable, functional, easy to use, readily available, and without significant cost. As I’ve covered in my review of Shimano Dura-Ace R9100 pedals, Shimano is simply the best once you factor in all-out durability and dependability. They’re not the lightest or most adjustable, but they just work. Adding to their popularity is the fact that they’ve often been included as standard equipment on many entry-level road bikes.

Advantage 2: Flats are forgiving. While they may readily show flaws in your technique, they also give you a saving grace: you can dab, even at speed, without having to worry about clipping back in. When cornering, you can throw your inside foot out moto-style to get your centre of gravity further forward, giving more grip to your front tyre. If things go really wrong, you can even throw the bike away. If you’re trying something new, flat pedals are ideal for giving you the security to bail.

In all trail scenarios, I’ve found the length of the XT pedals to be nice and supportive, with plenty of stability through the arch of the foot. Having gotten used to the enormous platform of the Pedalling Innovations Catalyst pedals (which measure 130mm long!), I tend to run my feet quite far forward on the pedal surface, positioning the axle almost right in the middle of my shoe. I find this helps with overall stability and power transfer, while reducing strain on my achilles and calf muscles. For this type of riding position, the big platform of the XTs is fantastic.

They are indeed the way to go. I use XT pedals for commuting on the crosser, Saints on my MTB and XT caged pedals on the Cervelo too (the latter does earn me some looks of disgust though)!
