After 25yrs of mtb , mountain biking at grOundle level has change, more travel more expectation of jumps drop offs etc. Spd s might be more efficient but for mere mortals just work on your fitness. Flats just like dropper posts give you confidence to try stuff knowing you can bail from the bike with ease. Plus if you manage to bunny hop, get air etc on flats you know you are doing it right. And when you have to walk or just want to get off the bike and explore you are not waddling around like a duck.

Good grief I’ve heard it all now… I don’t need to constantly fettle and tinker with mechanical shifting because I fear becoming complacent… what I do like is having to spend less time fettling and tinkering with my electronic groupset and having absolutely nailed, spot on, trouble free shifting so I can fettle and tinker on new builds, oh and just ride my bikes.

The primary thing I like about my e-bike is that it both encourages me to ride and enables me to keep up with younger riders. I’ve been leading bike outings for Sierra Club for many years, and some of our outings include hills. On my regular bike I’m a slow climber, always the last one to the top. On my e-bike, I reach the top when other riders do. Also, my wife is in ill health and is in a nursing home. She gets good care, but I support her in numerous other ways, so I have to keep myself in decent condition for her benefit. The e-bike helps me do that.
