The dual system does mean that these pedals are a little heavier than other options, so they’re not really favoured by those after pure performance.

DMR’s Vault flat pedal is hugely popular with both trail and gravity riders and with good reason. It’s super grippy and offers masses of support from a tough and reasonably lightweight platform, though you do need to keep an eye on the pins getting loose as they can rattle out. At full retail, they’re fairly pricey, but if you shop around they can be had for much less. Even at full whack they still make sense, with an all-around combination of grip, support and durability, putting the DMR Vaults up there with the best. They also come in a staggering array of colours, plus pro-rider special editions if you’re into the whole matching vibe.

If you’re buying a complete bike you’ll obviously get all the electronic parts you need, but if you’re buying electronic groupset separately make sure that you budget for everything that you need on top of the obvious components.

“Through our work, we’ve seen e-bikes break down barriers for cycling,” MacArthur said. “Particularly people of working age … people (interviewed in the survey) who commuted by e-bike were commuting up to an average of 9 miles. Before e-bikes, 5 miles had been arbitrary wall to cycling for commuters.”

When pedaling, both offer a great platform with lots of support. The bearings are smooth, and during our testing we have had zero issues with either. The Look uses a needle bearing under the platform of the pedal, and from our experience this leads to very little service or maintenance.

Shimano shoes are generally quite generous with who they fit, and the XC5’s relaxed nature only adds to this reputation. With a more open heel design, a forgiving upper and a pliable sole, there’s certainly more leeway here than with a race shoe. However, a lack of width choices is perhaps as much a sign of the price as it is of demand. If your foot shape is at one extreme of the bell-curve, you’ll likely want to pursue something with additional width options.

Add in the relatively low price, widespread availability, and decent durability of the large plastic cleat, and Shimano also set the benchmark for running costs. The cleat’s generously wide platform and softer co-molded contact points even make it far better to walk in than you’d expect, even decent to walk in, even on those dreaded tiled cafe floors. Other makes have sought to catch up in this regard, but SPD-SL still remains the best option in that respect.

The A600’s standard Shimano SPD SH-51 cleat is positively tiny as compared to the road variants from Shimano, Look, or Time, though (and even Speedplay’s lollipop-like design has more cleat-to-pedal contact area than this). As a result, one might assume that the A600 would feel like a wobbly mess. However, Shimano gets around this by instead supporting the tread blocks on shoes with recessed two-bolt cleat pockets.

There are four grub-screw-style traction pins per side, which sit around 4mm off the platform. Once clipped in, I found that the height of the mechanism made the front pins somewhat redundant.

Go to a safe place—one without traffic—to practice starting, stopping, and unclipping while moving. At a stop, one of your feet will already be clipped in; move that pedal to the top of the pedal stroke. Push down on that pedal to start, and as the bike accelerates, find the opposite pedal to clip into and start pedaling. "If you miss the engagement with the opposite pedal, don’t stress," Compton says. "Just look forward and continue to pedal as you clip in with your foot. If the bike is moving forward you won’t fall over—the faster you go, the easier it is to balance."
