Of course, I understand that not all cyclists are enchanted by nature, and that for some, the infinite verdant delights of the forest are merely incidental. You can see such riders making videos of one another “sessioning” the same obstacle over and over again whilst bellowing déclassé exclamations of delight such as “Woo-hoo!”

Ultimately, there really are only four main players when it comes to road-oriented, three-hole pedal systems: Shimano, Look, Speedplay, and Time. There are others to consider, such as Keywin and Coombe, but you’ll be hard pressed to find any of these alternatives in your local bunches. Given this, it shouldn’t be too surprising to see that our team’s preferences are split amongst the mainstream brands. Many of us have used many others, but we retain our go-to choices. Read on to learn more about our personal choices, and why we all went that way.

I opted for the larger of the two sizes, which gave me 114x111mm of surface area to slap my feet onto. I really appreciated this when scrabbling to get a foot back on in tricky terrain. 

The cartridge-style axle assembly is widely used in Shimano’s pedal range, and offers well-proven durability. When needed, it’s also very easy to service.

The BC-born, Chromag Surface Ti hardtail is a unique beast. The Surface sits solidly in the all-mountain hardtail category, designed for a 150mm fork and 29×2.4” or 27.5×2.8” tires. Leaning into a 66° head tube and 75° seat tube angle, the bike is clearly capable of dropping your friends downhill and keeping pace on the climbs. With external cable routing and an external BSA bottom-bracket, this is a frame to keep most home mechanics riding more than tinkering. The frame is constructed from custom-drawn Ti tubes, resulting in a dialed ride quality on rocky BC singletrack.

Flats for fun, on my jump bike and trail bike; clipless for distance, on my road bike, commuter bike and occasionally on my trail bike. All based on need for efficiency vs need to bail!

No doubt, these are more like a cross-country mountain bike shoe than a road shoe. The 2-bolt SPD compatibility and generous Michelin tread is all the evidence you need there. However, the laced retention, synthetic upper and reflective details are not features you’d typically seek (or find) in a mountain bike shoe.

On road: Speedplay just shit. [Queue outrage from the zealots who use them. But they are.] Having started out on mountain bikes and Atac pedals, used Time for years but never got on them after they switched from RXS to iClic (or vive versa, I don’t recall). Have now been on Look Keos for better part of a decade. They work and you can get a range of different price points.
