You notice their lack of weight when pedalling, but what really grabs your attention is the impressive power transfer. Stamp hard on the pedals and there’s no hint of flex. As a city dweller, escaping the city limits for a mountain bike ride in the woods is one of my greatest pleasures. There’s nothing quite as soothing as leaves rustling, birds singing, and brooks babbling, all against the backdrop of voluminous knobby tires rolling over singletrack. Granted, most of my off-road exploits still take place within commuting distance of Manhattan, but were it not for the faint thrumming of automobile traffic on some distant expressway, it would be easy to convince myself I was 100 miles away from civilization.

They are indeed the way to go. I use XT pedals for commuting on the crosser, Saints on my MTB and XT caged pedals on the Cervelo too (the latter does earn me some looks of disgust though)!

Throughout the ride, one thing has become clear. We are all of us riders of different inclinations, different enthusiasms and experiences – but we’re all riders nevertheless, and we’re all having a total blast. Not all of us knew the others before we set out, but all of us are now friends, joined by a common bond of experience – not of the radical, or of the extreme – but of the exceptional. There aren’t many folk out on this moist, foggy Tuesday. Not nearly enough people are astride bikes, variously manualling or tripodding gingerly down mud descents, all giggling with delight, and with shared jokes. All of us jawing good-naturedly over hot coffee and cake outside a shop in what feels like the middle of nowhere. This is a lot of fun.

The interior side of the nylon sole is moulded in a gridded pattern, something that attempts to optimise stiffness while reducing weight. While I can’t say I actually noticed it, this type of design does increase the stack height.

The cleats’ strength derives from a piece of spring steel. Basically, it’s a steel tongue that bites against the pedal. This is also where the tension and strength in the system derive. Unlike typical road cleats that adjust on the pedal, the Pitbull system adjusts from the cleat. Riders can adjust the cleat’s spring steel to make it stiffer or more flexible.

Clipless pedals are popular because they provide a firm, secure connection between bike and rider that’s easier to release than the previous system of straps and slotted cleats. But which of the many systems is best for you?

The A600s also provide a reassuringly secure hold, they’re as easy to engage as conventional road pedals since the body always hangs at the right angle, there’s ample tangible and audible feedback from the entry and release, and there’s a good range of tension adjustment on tap as well.

Most pedals will have L or R printed or embossed on them somewhere, so it’s worth taking a look before starting to screw them back in. Above all, go carefully and hand screw the pedal to make sure that it’s screwing in correctly, only using a spanner or allen key once you have it most of the way in.
