Avoiding traffic and ease of travel appear to be the primary motivations for people commuting by e-bike, also known as electric-assist bikes. Speaking for myself, cycling’s also fun, all the more so because the majority of my St. Johns-Vancouver route rolls along pedestrian/bicyclist-only paths.

I really liked using these and was happy with the pedal body, the low weight and the simple engagement system. If Time can work out how to resolve the squeaking I experienced then the score would be higher still.

In general, women have narrower ankles than men and smaller feet. Women’s shoes are therefore a slightly different shape, and some models are available in smaller sizes than the 36 that’s usually the lower limit of men’s ranges. Women’s shoes are not always different in design to the men’s version though, sometimes it is just the colourway that changes so check before you buy. As with all shoes, it’s personal preference with regards to fit and just because you are female doesn’t necessarily mean you will be better off in a female style shoe. Try before you buy.

The UCI’s decision was apparently driven by safety concerns, although it’s not clear that the organization has date showing the frequency of injuries caused by clipless pedals. Anecdotally some BMX fans have seen small riders stuck in their pedals.

Should you be excited about the Pitbull system? That depends on what you’re after — and your budget. According to Pitbull’s creators, they expect the system “would be marketed alongside the medium- to high-end pedals currently on the market.” That likely puts it over $100 per pair.

SH-56 – multi-release cleats that allow your shoe to be disengaged by rolling or twisting the foot in any direction and even release with sufficiently hard (and considerable) upward force. Good for beginners and supplied with some pedals.

The X2 uses the same clip mechanism that differentiates HT pedals from all others on the market. This hybrid mechanism combines a tension bar on the front, like Time, but uses a cage at the back, like Shimano (though the HT cleats won’t work with either system). The result is a feel that straddles the two – engagement is positive, with an audible ‘click’ as the cage snaps down over the back of the cleat, but the rounded tension bar smoothens both entry and release. It’s a really nice balance – like riding a set of quality carbon wheels that are responsive, yet nicely damped on the trail.

Shimano’s PD-T400 Click’R pedals have a mechanism that’s incredibly light, so it’s very easy to release your shoes from the pedals. They’re a useful option for cyclists keen to try clipless pedals for the first time.

One more note on adjustability: The major difference between AeroLite and the Pitbull system, Lohmeyer claims, is the addition of float. The AeroLite system receives criticism from some cyclists for its lack of float. Lohmeyer worked with his partner to engineer float, which he demonstrated in a prototype here.

Not the cheapest or the lightest flat pedal, but the grip and durability on offer make the Specialized Boomslang’s well worth the trade-off. At 439g a pair, they’re not the lightest pedal in the playground, but who cares when they’re this good. Strength and durability come at a price, £125 to be precise. But for that, you get a durable pedal with spare pins carried in the pedal itself too, they’re ‘weathering’ well too we are happy to say.
