I’m well aware that this is considered as crash damage, so it’s entirely outside of Shimano’s typical warranty policy. I’m also aware that smacking pedals has a lot to do with technique and the bike you’re riding, and not everyone will put these through the same beating that I subjected them to.
Each of the derailleurs of a SRAM Red eTap system has its own rechargeable battery that lasts for over 1,000km (625 miles) of typical riding. A green indicator light on each component turns on after each shift. Once the battery charge is below 25%, that light turns red and below 15% the light starts to flash red.Â
When setting up the Look cleats, the slotted openings and washers allow for many variations of angles and positions. Both cleats enter the pedal with the toe before stepping back into the pedal to be clipped in. As you step into the back of the Look, the retention arm opens under pressure and then closes on the cleat. The Time Iclic system works almost in the same fashion, but there is a small lever that holds the retention arm open so there is nearly no effort needed to step into the pedal and secure the cleat.

Usually a variant on one of two basic shapes: full-length axle and three-quarter (ish) axle. Durability has been really good. The shoes are reinforced in the key places to avoid the upper getting damaged when walking up an unrideable track or smashing your toe into an unseen rock. The rubber tread is showing little sign of wear and tear despite a reasonable amount of hike-a-bike and cyclocross racing, which is a good thing as it’s not replaceable.
This year I shall be leaving my flats on the FSB but going back to SPD’s on the hardtail and cyclecross bikes.
One company, Speedplay, has bucked the consensus. Its pedals are double-sided, the mechanism is part of the cleat and that cleat has a four-bolt mounting. A three-bolt adapter is included with them, as few shoemakers have a suitable shoe in their line. More about Speedplay below.
I bought a pair of these on the strength of this review in the mag so they’d better be good or I may write a strongly worded letter.
