Speedplay’s ‘lillipops’ are road specific pedals that gain their power-transfer-platform from the cleat, as opposed to the pedal. This means the cleat needs looking after as it’s integral to an efficient pedal stroke.

For years, I had ridden clipless pedals exclusively. After experiencing severe Achilles pain during a bikepacking trip several years ago, I made the switch to flats for mountain biking. You can of course adjust the grip levels by mixing and matching the short and long pins, but I just went full-length all round for maximum grip. And boy are these pedals grippy! Combined with the large platform and the concave shape, the steel pins hold onto your shoes with vicious traction, providing plenty of small edges to bite into soft shoe soles. The DMR Vaults are known for being one of the grippiest out there, but I’d say these XT pedals are at least on par with the Vaults.

Even better, the cartridge-style axle assembly is well sealed and very easy to service, with proper steel ball bearings throughout instead of plastic bushings that will wear out over time. The forged aluminum bodies have proven impressively tough, too. Whereas some carbon fiber or plastic pedal bodies would explode on even moderate impacts, these A600s have shrugged off a number of direct rock strikes.

The BC-born, Chromag Surface Ti hardtail is a unique beast. The Surface sits solidly in the all-mountain hardtail category, designed for a 150mm fork and 29×2.4” or 27.5×2.8” tires. Leaning into a 66° head tube and 75° seat tube angle, the bike is clearly capable of dropping your friends downhill and keeping pace on the climbs. With external cable routing and an external BSA bottom-bracket, this is a frame to keep most home mechanics riding more than tinkering. The frame is constructed from custom-drawn Ti tubes, resulting in a dialed ride quality on rocky BC singletrack.

Shimano A600 spd one sided pedals have a large light weight cage and make a good alternative to Durace SLs. At around £50  discounted​ the A 600s only weigh a few grams less than Durace and look the part on any road bike. Spd cleats wear a hell of a lot longer than their plastic counterparts.
