In the world of cycling, it’s common knowledge that in order to engage in "serious" riding you need foot retention, which today means using some type of clipless pedal system.

Now I couldn’t use anything else. They are just pheneomenal compared to the various Looks I usually use. They need broken in first of all as the spring is super stiff, but once done then it only takes a little force to clip in. The stack height is just 13.5mm, which makes you feel engaged with the pedals and able to eke out every ounce of power. There’s also plenty of float when you need it, but out of the saddle I didn’t sense any unwanted lateral movement. E-bike sales at independent bicycle retailers were up 70 percent this year compared with the same 12-month period last year, she said, though the segment is believed to be a low single-digit percentage of overall bike sales in the U.S.

That’s perhaps why you might find cyclocross coaches recommending flat pedals for young racers. It’s vital for cyclocrossers to be able to bunny-hop confidently, and properly. Learning the real technique means positioning your feet properly, and managing your bicycle’s weight. Flat pedals force a rider to do exactly that, without allowing clipless pedals to pick up the slack.

For regular and technical trail riding, I use Shimano XT clipless and Specialized Comp Mountain Bike shoes.
