Review: Sixpack Racing goes straight after Shimano with the Vertic Trail SPD pedals | Spd Pedals

The Stomp has a very large platform, measuring 107mm wide and 120mm long. The pedals certainly provide a ton of traction as well, with 11 reversible pins per side.

Really I’d only recommend them to riders who will find that learning curve worth the touch of extra speed off the lights or side of the road. To me it was.

Even with cleats, the Hellcats work pretty well with flat pedals, thanks to the deep cleat recess in the sole.  I had some concern about the cleat catching on the pedal, but didn’t find this to be an issue in limited testing. This is probably off-label use anyway, so take this with a grain of salt.

Clipless pedals have a spring-loaded mechanism that grabs a specially shaped stud, known as a cleat, on the sole of the shoe. You press the cleat down to click it into the mechanism, and twist out to release.

I’ve now been on flats for a year (maybe I need a self help group) and although getting use to them I do miss the ultimate control and 360 power transfer that SPD’s bring.

Beginner riders and those looking to hone their MTB skills are returning to old-school flat pedals with lots of new options on the market.
