DMR’s Vault flat pedal is hugely popular with both trail and gravity riders and with good reason. It’s super grippy and offers masses of support from a tough and reasonably lightweight platform, though you do need to keep an eye on the pins getting loose as they can rattle out. At full retail, they’re fairly pricey, but if you shop around they can be had for much less. Even at full whack they still make sense, with an all-around combination of grip, support and durability, putting the DMR Vaults up there with the best. They also come in a staggering array of colours, plus pro-rider special editions if you’re into the whole matching vibe.
The speed I can clip in now off the lights is wicked. Actually feels a bit show-offy it’s that smooth and fast. I also rub a little lube on the cleat spring every weekend, that makes it super smooth to clip in too now.
You might get a little bit of occasional chain rub on the chain set because the chain won’t sit quite straight on the chainwheel sometimes, and…
There isn’t a triple option for EPS. In fact I don’t think there’s a triple option for any e-shifting system.
Some folks find pedals like the M520s a bit small. The PD-M424 pedals are an excellent alternative. Intended for mountain biking, they have a tough plastic platform around the pedal mechanism that supports more of the shoe. This works really well with shoes that have more flexible soles and are therefore easier to walk in.
They’re not the thinnest of pedals, measuring 18mm thick at the centre of the body. Compare that to 17mm for the DMR Vaults, 15mm for the Hope F20s, 10mm for the Gamut Podiums, and 8.3mm for the OneUp flat pedals. The XT pedals do have a nice concave platform though, with the bodies measuring 20mm at the fore and aft of the platform, providing a slight bowl shape for your feet to sink into.
The flipside of this wider Q-factor is that the XT flats do add noticeable stability by placing your feet further apart – kind of like using a wider handlebar. This is ideal for gravity-type riding, and those newer to the sport will also benefit from the improved stability. Riders with bigger and/or wider feet will also appreciate the big platform.
Such is the seeming demand for open-toed cycling footwear that CyclingAbout.com (an excellent resource for budding cycle tourers) has gone as far as writing a buyer’s guide for them.
