Review: The huge Shimano Deore XT PD-M8040 flat pedals come with vicious pins, but not all of them made it | Bike Self Locking Pedals

While the UCI reportedly discussed the rule change with national federation representatives in June at the BMX world championships in Azerbaijan, the change in late September took many by surprise. With the long lead times typical of shoe manufacturing, some brands may have small clipless BMX shoes in production or on the water. Some dealers who are active in the BMX race market have already committed to preseason orders for those shoes. Those sizes may be difficult to sell next year.

Interestingly, the Look Keo cleat fitment is the most widely borrowed (copied) of all the systems on the market. If you’re looking at pedals with internal powermeters, they’ll more than likely use the Keo cleat. Likewise, road pedals from the likes of Wellgo, Exustar, HT and Ritchey all use the Keo cleat design too. Part of this wider usage is likely due to Shimano keeping a tight reign on its design, but it also sings praise for how popular the Look system is.

Once you’ve selected a pedal system, you’ll find yourself faced with more decisions: all pedal systems are available at a wide range pf price points.

Mavic now sells wheel ‘systems’. If you buy a set of their wheels, they come equipped with matching tyres. It makes the shopping experience that much easier (pick some wheels, don’t worry about tyres) and, because Mavic puts as much effort into the tyres as the rest, the results are consistently good across such diverse disciplines as road, gravel and MTB. UST (Universal System Tubeless) is Mavic’s label for tubeless, both on road and off. The mountain bike side of UST has been around for many years, but the road versions are new.

The influence of the SPD sandal can also clearly be seen in Mavic’s skeletal €1,000 Comete Ultimate shoes. Perhaps with the obvious weight savings to be had, 2018 will go the other way and be the year of the performance cycling sandal?

Look at it this way: Would you go to a Slipknot show and set up a stationary trainer so you can ride while you rock out? No, you wouldn’t. So why listen to them on a crappy little speaker while you’re riding in the forest? And hey, guess what? They actually do have places you can go to ride hard while listening to music at top volume and they’re called spin classes. Ain’t nothing wrong with that.

Taking that into account, the A600’s support platform is actually fairly wide. The four degrees of free float also feels rather, well, free — not quite as silky-smooth as a set of fresh and clean road pedals and cleats, mind you, but not too far off, either.

The extra float and seamless engagement provide some of the freedom of a flat pedal with the added security of being clipped in. The only downside is that they’re more expensive than Shimano’s XTR Trail M9020 pedals, and nearly double the XT M8020 Trail platform pedals. And while they’re lighter than the Mallet DH pedals (480g) they’re still 41g heavier than the XTR pedals.
