Well, one mishap on this trip already. All of the bikes were either reserved or uncharged so I wasn’t able to enter the code to unlock the bike. The only one that worked had a flat tire
I run Time ATAC pedals on both hardtail and FS bikes, as I have for many years. I find they clear well in my local Cotswold mud. I wear stiff shoes with these: Sidi Dominators & Northwave GTX for winter.
Moving away from cross country shoes other mountain bike shoes have more flexible footbeds, making them better all rounder’s for comfortable trail riding, the odd bit of walking or hike-a-biking and also offering more grip on larger platform pedals like these Crankbrothers Mallet E pedals. Something like the Giro Manta is a typical trail shoe design, it has the tidy looks of an XC shoe, it’s pretty light, fends off weather well and is stiff without being impractically so.

For years, I had ridden clipless pedals exclusively. After experiencing severe Achilles pain during a bikepacking trip several years ago, I made the switch to flats for mountain biking. The ability to reposition my feet while riding gave me a newfound sense of freedom and confidence I hadn’t experienced before.

Price: $130 Weight: 495gStyle: MountainSizes: 6.5–12 (w/half sizes)The right shoe for: Mountain bikers who love the look and feel of a flat shoe but want the efficiency that comes with being clipped in.
The recessed area itself is reinforced with a hard plastic material, and it’s located further toward the middle of the foot than a traditional clipless mountain bike shoe. There’s a big range of adjustment, which is great for those who are used to riding flat pedals closer to mid-foot than big toe.
The low weight is achieved by the use of every lightweight material you can think of: carbon-reinforced thermoplastic bodies; ceramic bearings; titanium axles; titanium bolts; and aluminium top plates. The cleats have been lightened too with carbon fiber replacing the plastic and aluminium fasteners instead of steel. They’re bonkers expensive, but you have to admire the fanaticism.
First introduced to the off-road world in 1990 by Shimano, clip-in pedals (formerly and incorrectly labelled as ‘clipless’ pedals [Wil is willing to take this assertion to the pub – Ed]) promptly rose amongst the pro ranks in mountain bike racing. Offering more efficiency and better power transfer by way of stiffer clip-specific shoe soles, for many competitive types there is no other choice.
If you have a shifting problem with a mechanical system, the issue is usually pretty obvious. You can tell instantly if the cable has snapped, if it’s too loose, or whatever, and put it right.
