Joining the Deore XT SPD pedals, the XT flat pedals are pitched at the trail, enduro and e-MTB markets. This is a bit of a shift for the Japanese brand, which up until now has only marketed flat pedals for BMX and DH racing. As more everyday trail riders look to pedal with flats rather than clips however, Shimano has sought to expand its range of flat pedals and shoes accordingly.

Right now, as I ponder the chalk and steeze aspects of both Oop North and the North Downs, it’s increasingly obvious that what the South lacks in Yorkshire Grit, it’s trying gamely to make up in terms of moisture. The following day’s ride may well prove to be interesting – and I for one am very glad I’ve brought my waterproof socks.

Shimano’s PD-T400 Click’R pedals have a mechanism that’s incredibly light, so it’s very easy to release your shoes from the pedals. They’re a useful option for cyclists keen to try clipless pedals for the first time.

I love speedplay – would never even contemplate another pedal/cleat system. They’re are great for commuting as they are so easy to clip in/out of and with keep on kovers they will last for ages.

Measuring in at 114mm x 111mm, the Stamps are pretty huge. Using the same sealed bearings and Igus LL-glide bushings found on their other pedals, they spin insanely smooth.

The Fizik Infinito X1 shoes are incredibly stiff for maximum power transfer, ideal for racers and pedal thrashers that don’t want to give away precious power to a flexy sole, and the highly adjustable Boa dial arrangement and fit provides great comfort. This post checks all the boxes. It’s easy to install and competitively priced. Through six months of riding in winter much and summer dust, the Tellis has been flawlessly reliable. I use the e-bike for various errands in addition to recreational riding, although this time of year it’s a little more challenging for me because I don’t particularly enjoy riding in the rain.

The bad news is that very few models of Shimano pedals come with multi-release cleats, so probably you’ll have to buy them in addition to the pedals. The good news is that basic SPD pedals are very cheap but really durable, so buying extra cleats isn’t a big financial burden.
