Personally, my favorite pedals in this group are the Chromag Scarabs. Between the performance and reliability, the Scarabs lead the pack by far, and they look pretty bad ass too. The nearly infinite level of pin customization also makes them the top choice when looking for a good flat pedal.
But the pedals aren’t entirely different from other road options. Unclipping was the same as any other system I’ve used: A quick flick of the heel released my foot.
At 45, IÂ recently started using cleats (having used old-style clips as a teenager) and have ended up with exactly the solution suggested here – double-sided pedals and multi-release cleats. Â Fabulous combo – works really well for me.

Nice roundup! I have to give a shoutout to the Specialized 2Fo Flat 1.0. I went to these from some FiveTens and I was blown away. Phenomenal grip, in fact I found myself twisting my foot subconsciously as I dismounted from my bike (my feet thought they clipped in, I suppose). They are also super lightweight, and the neoprene sleeve keeps crap out.
The speed I can clip in now off the lights is wicked. Actually feels a bit show-offy it’s that smooth and fast. I also rub a little lube on the cleat spring every weekend, that makes it super smooth to clip in too now.
Light rail won. But that may have been more about an abundance of caution, and perhaps a hint of operator error.

Now I couldn’t use anything else. They are just pheneomenal compared to the various Looks I usually use. They need broken in first of all as the spring is super stiff, but once done then it only takes a little force to clip in. Actually finding the insert point is a few weeks of muscle memory (I stuck them on the indoor trainer first which sped this process up).

I think If you have lights front and rear and clothing with some refelctive trim you are extremely unlikely to be stopped for not having reflective pedals, even though they are a legal requirement technically.
