The Time Xpresso 15 pedals are extremely light and clipping in/twisting out could hardly be easier. The downside is the price, and the cleats wear noticeably faster than those of other brands.

You don’t see HT pedals around that much, though their popularity is steadily growing. Launched in 2005 by parent company Hsing Ta Industrial, HT Components is still young. With over half a century’s worth of manufacturing experience in bicycle pedals behind it, however, it certainly isn’t lacking in experience. We tried a similar update to the “bar pedal” design years ago. While that proved extremely light, we had trouble clipping reliably. The Pitbull update, however, excelled in ease of use thanks to its large clip-in surface. This comes with a few extra ounces, but Lohmeyer isn’t aiming at a Tour-ready pedal with this system.

At the top of the pile sits Shimano Dura Ace. If you need the best that money can buy, then this is the option for you. Thankfully we’ve also managed to find a bit of a discount.

Things can get a bit fiddly with pulling the bearings out to clean them, but it’s really not that difficult to do. And technically you do require a very small 10mm cone spanner to retighten the bearings, though I ended up improvising with some needle-nose pliers to get the job done. Once tightened up and reinstalled into the pedal body, the play had disappeared, and the bearings were back to spinning smoothly again.

“It’s not so much a question of replacing your bike as it is replacing your car,” Frothingham said. “There are certainly people in some areas who see they can get rid of their car. Or park it and use (the e-bike) for commuting.”

Stepping into the Saint SPD is like walking into your local pub that’s just hired a new top chef. It’s as familiar and inviting as it’s always been, but the quality has stepped up a notch. Engagement is more positive than Time and Crank Brothers, with a solid clunk that sounds like closing a luxury car door. It’s as sturdy and reliable as you’d expect of any Shimano clip-in pedal, but the action is smoother than all the other pedals on test.

And for everyday riders, clipless pedals still have a host of advantages, the least of which is power transfer on climbs. (Your local trails don’t have lift service, do they?) They also keep your feet from slipping off your pedals on bumpy terrain.
