What is it about the extremities of cyclists that causes such heat?  Helmets, and now, apparently, cleats.

GCN tested this in the lab in a recent YouTube video and found that clipless did not increase power – they seemed a bit shocked that the common precept that clipless are better for power and efficiency could was not proven in testing.

Many flat pedals use commonly available steel M4 socket caps or grub screws, which makes replacing pins cheap and easy. Some companies are pushing at the limits of pin design though, tweaking them to maximise grip, lower weight, or sometimes to be less aggressive.

Unlike Shimano’s old Saint and DX flat pedals though, the pins used on the XT body don’t thread in from the back. Instead, Shimano uses steel grub screws that thread directly into the pedal body. This presents an issue if you grind a pin against a rock, as you’re also grinding away the surface that you would insert a 2mm hex key into for installing or removing the pins. Once this happens, it’s a case of getting out the ‘negotiator’ (pliers) to remove those busted pins.

Shimano’s PD-T400 Click’R pedals have a mechanism that’s incredibly light, so it’s very easy to release your shoes from the pedals. They’re a useful option for cyclists keen to try clipless pedals for the first time.

I love speedplay – would never even contemplate another pedal/cleat system. They’re are great for commuting as they are so easy to clip in/out of and with keep on kovers they will last for ages.

Once you undo the black lock bush, the chromoly axle and all of the spinny bits come out of the pedal body with it. On the end of the axle is a lock nut, and then the primary cone that you use to adjust the preload on the bearings. Just like a Shimano hub, there are two rows of cup ‘n’ cone bearings, and each one contains 12 large diameter ball bearings, which are quite a bit bigger than what you’ll find in the average cartridge bearing used in many other pedals.

hands down the most comprehensive list of flat shoes i’ve found on the world wide web, well done Brian, I will be using this list when my current pair wears out. One thing I thought was interesting was that adidas now owns five Ten yet they’re putting out their own shoe…. would like to see some field reports of those Terrex. I did experience a hiccup with unclipping the Hellcats. Essentially, the wide toe, combined with the cleat placement, causes the crankarm to block the twisting motion required for me to unclip. This turned out to be a problem from the beginning, and it didn’t matter if the cleat was slammed all the way forward or back.
