Compared to Shimano’s popular XTR Trail pedals, the Saint uses a more robust forged alloy body that measures 78.1mm wide and 91mm long. This adds weight, with the pair of pedals coming in at 535g (sans cleats). Q-factor is the same at 55mm, but there’s more usable surface area on each side of the SPD mechanism, making the Saint feel bigger underfoot with less rocking and wiggle. The flatter overall shape doesn’t quite cup your shoes like the concave platform of the Nukeproof, HT and Crank Brothers pedals, but the flip side is greater compatibility with different shoes and tread designs.
Selling for £89 for the pair, the XT flat pedals can be had in two platform sizes to suit different shoe sizes. I’ve been testing a set of the Large size for the past three months, which come in at 491g as tested.
A lace enclosure is augmented with a strong, wide, velcro strap that is easy to cinch and keep tight. I’ve actually been quite pleased with how secure the strap feels, and it keeps my heel planted in the shoe through the upstroke. The velcro strap also keeps the ends of the laces lashed down and out of the way.
It may not have some of the fancier features like colour mapping or a touch screen. But what the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt does do, it does really well. The menus and buttons are intuitive and easy to use. The mapping is incredibly simple to read and understand on the fly, and it pairs super easily with heart rate monitors and power meters.

For experienced bicyclists with their own bicycle, that may be the way to go. Pamela Larson, a data reporter here, swears by it. It usually takes her about 12 minutes from central Phoenix.
“I’ve been toying with the idea of switching to Time, but still currently prefer Shimano. Time offer smoother float and a lower weight. And the cheap Time pedals are pretty damned good. But I’m not switching until I know the bearings are sufficiently durable.”

Specialized cycling shoes usually use cleats on the bottom of the shoes, and a matching spring-loaded clip on the pedal. SPD cleats are the most common type you’re likely to see in classes. (Pro tip: these are called “clipless” pedals, even though you have to clip in, because clips, aka toe clips, are something else entirely.)
I currently use some carbon soled MTB shoes with M520s. Â Would I honestly notice any difference if I switched to a road shoe/pedal system?
Granted, there are caveats. That stability and rotation performance are heavily dependent on how well the shoes interface with the pedal, and perhaps not surprisingly, shoes designed for cross-country MTB racing work best in that situation given they’re usually made with fairly hard tread blocks and stiff carbon fiber soles that provide added support.
That said, Di2 is customisable. You could reconfigure the system and make the button that’s hidden at the top of each hood perform upshifts, for example, to sidestep any problem.
