Fischer is talking while sitting on a waist-high wall outside his shop, a few blocks from the largely dormant Camas paper mill. He and I had just returned from a tour on e-bikes in the neighborhood around the shop.

Speedplay offer a premium option. I would like to see a court case to prove that a reflective anywhere around the foot is sufficient and it does not need to be specifically on the pedal.

Before hitting the trail for the first time, I removed all of the stock pins and fitted the 5mm pins that come inside the box. The threads already come prepped with blue Loctite, which makes them firm to screw in. Once in place though, they aren’t likely to go anywhere.

As a result of this resurgence, footwear brands are newly invested in flat-soled shoes. Despite the narrower last, it’s still roomier than other comparable shoes, but the padding around the ankle and on the tongue keeps the fit snug. This shoe excels at repelling mud and water, and even when it does end up in a puddle, it dries pretty quickly. While out riding, the only time I was able to notice a major difference between the Freerider Pro and Maltese Falcon was on rock gardens; the SPD cleat on the latter gave me that little extra from each pedal stroke to get me through.

Look invented the first successful clipless pedal, and has spent 30 years refining it. These pedals use a fibreglass spring rather than a steel one to save weight. That means you can’t adjust the release tension, so for riders who want an easier exit, Look also makes another version with an 8Nm spring. If you get the wrong version you can get a dealer to change the spring.

But as a staunch commuter and road cyclist, I responded, curious what innovation a cabinet-maker — Mike Lohmeyer — could provide an industry plagued by stagnation. Turns out, Lohmeyer and “Frank” engineered — and possibly perfected — a modern take on the AeroLite pedal that dates back to the ’70s.

When researching this article I was surprised (horrified?) to discover that there are a number of SPD-compatible sandals on the market. Further research revealed that someone has even converted Birkenstocks into SPD-compatible kicks!
