According to a Trek recall notice, "A limited number of these pedals were made with hydrogen embrittlement in the spindle of the pedal, which could cause one or both of the pedals to fail. If the spindle fails, the pedal body could separate from the spindle. If this happens while riding the bicycle, you could be involved in a serious accident."

Even the cheapest pedals have never really been better than now, and prove they don’t have to be generic to come in under a budget.

As the pins are of the grub-screw variety and screw in from the top, they fill with dirt easily, which makes them harder to adjust. I extended them to just over 5mm and was impressed with the traction on offer, bolstered by the incredibly stable platform. I’m yet to dislodge any pins, even after numerous rock strikes.

The Yksion UST tyres use a rubber compound called Storm11. This is the same compound that Hutchinson uses on their top racing tyres – and it turns out that Hutchinson makes the Mavic UST tyres. Unlike the Hutchinson tyres, the Mavics have quite an extensive tread.
