Sealing is a crucial aspect of flat pedals for UK riders and, like a lot of bike components, this aspect tends to vary, perhaps according to where they were designed. Poor seals might not matter so much in sunny locales, but in UK filth you’ll only get so long before you hear a grinding noise pulverising your pedals from the inside out.

It’s very easy to strip the threads from an aluminium crank arm and expensive to replace it if you do, so if you’re not sure the pedal is going in correctly unscrew it and start again.

Cycling shoes usually have quite a stiff sole but this varies greatly depending on their intended use. Clip-in shoes tend to have stiffer plastic soles with rubber lugs for good grip. Soles can have carbon fibre inserts through their length or alternatively just in just the midsole to boost stiffness. A cross-country shoe like this pair of Shimano XC7 SPD shoes has a stiff sole for good power transfer on cross-county, cyclocross and gravel bikes. One thing I thought was interesting was that adidas now owns five Ten yet they’re putting out their own shoe…. would like to see some field reports of those Terrex. Throughout the ride, one thing has become clear. We are all of us riders of different inclinations, different enthusiasms and experiences – but we’re all riders nevertheless, and we’re all having a total blast.
