Inflation of the tyre was trivially easy. A few strokes of the floor pump saw the tyre take up a good seal with the rim. A few more strokes brought on the first of (usually) four ‘pop’ noises as the bead moved onto the retention ledge. The final pop usually occurred at 70psi.

The flatulence analogy is particularly apt because the musical tastes of the typical Bluetooth speaker user are predictably toxic. With a couple of exceptions, such as Crank Bros and Time, many of the 2-bolt cleat designs (Wellgo, Ritchey, Boardman) are interchangable or, at least, the pedal design will accept the Shimano SPD cleat without too much problem. I have a couple of old sets of VP pedals that work fine with SPD cleats, but not the other way round.

For experienced bicyclists with their own bicycle, that may be the way to go. Pamela Larson, a data reporter here, swears by it. It usually takes her about 12 minutes from central Phoenix.

Two-bolt pedals are usually double-sided. This makes entry very easy; after a very small amount of practice you learn to just stomp on the pedal and away you go.

Also, the Pitbull system is strong. I did manage to pull out of the pedal once, but it took considerable effort and occurred while I was trying to do so. Plus, I wasn’t on the cleat’s stiffest setting. With the spring steel’s adjustment screw, I added more bite once I was used to getting into and out of the pedals.

The Yksion UST tyres use a rubber compound called Storm11. This is the same compound that Hutchinson uses on their top racing tyres – and it turns out that Hutchinson makes the Mavic UST tyres. Unlike the Hutchinson tyres, the Mavics have quite an extensive tread. And unlike Mavic’s tube-specific tyres, the front and rear are the same tyre (though the directional arrows encourage you to run them in opposite directions).

I used to get lots of people telling me to “upgrade” my MTB to clipless, but that doesn’t happen now.

For mountain bikers, Shimano pedals also represent a solid investment. In our opinion, they provide basically the gold standard compromise of weight, durability and performance — and typically for Shimano can be found at very reasonable prices.
