You’re pretty much guaranteed to live your life at a slower pace in sandals, so I wouldn’t be surprised if someone claims they’re the next must-have accessory for a more wholesome life on a bike.

Furthermore, consider that the sort of person who plays a Bluetooth speaker while mountain biking has almost certainly driven to the ride, which means they’ve had all that time at home getting ready, plus the drive itself, to pump themselves up by listening to some band that sounds like every member has a braided goatee. I currently use some carbon soled MTB shoes with M520s.  Would I honestly notice any difference if I switched to a road shoe/pedal system?

Eventually, you get so used to the action of clipping in that it becomes very quick, but even when you miss, you still can put pressure on through the pedals. The same cannot be said of my SPD-SL pedals on my road bike! Once you’re in those, you don’t want to have to put your feet down again unless absolutely necessary.

When pedaling, both offer a great platform with lots of support. The bearings are smooth, and during our testing we have had zero issues with either. The Look uses a needle bearing under the platform of the pedal, and from our experience this leads to very little service or maintenance.

When using some winter shoes with cleats I also experience such squeaking with SPD (MTB style) pedals like the PD-M520s from Shimano. As the manufacturer has sensibly remarked here, a bit of teflon spray makes the sound go away (for a time of course – then rinse & repeat).

The Yksion UST tyres use a rubber compound called Storm11. This is the same compound that Hutchinson uses on their top racing tyres – and it turns out that Hutchinson makes the Mavic UST tyres. Unlike the Hutchinson tyres, the Mavics have quite an extensive tread. And unlike Mavic’s tube-specific tyres, the front and rear are the same tyre (though the directional arrows encourage you to run them in opposite directions).

I’d like to not argue doctrinal points, and World Cup leader boards aren’t necessarily a great place to look for data to apply to people who aren’t racing World Cup courses. The fact is that both pedal systems have advantages for mere mortals. The guts of the pedal is a well-finished Aluminium body that houses serviceable cup and cone bearings. A metal cage is bolted on for riding in flats, and on the other side you get an adjustable tension SPD binding for when you’ve got your cleats on. The pedals are very well finished and run smoothly from the off, and the fact that they’re easy to strip down is a bonus.
